Sometimes as we move up the ladder of successful living, it becomes more and more important that we be liked and admired. Our ego finds it advantageous to say and do what pleases others at the sacrifice of our own authenticity. We become people pleasers and lets face it, it does seem to have its rewards. If I agree with you and do what you like, I’ve convinced myself that you will love me and accept me. Then I’m home free or so I think.

No matter how far I wander off from my center. I was in a group meeting some time last year when I found myself being completely triggered by what some one was saying. Immediately my ego flared up into judgment mode about this particular individual in the group. I was labeling them as insecure, having an agenda etc. Just to quote mildly. My mind rose with my own self defense mechanisms of intellectualizing – justifying my feelings.

During my three year sabbatical I spent my time in doors between journaling, reading and television. In spite of the achievements and accolades the best gift I could have given myself was this time of reflection. In fact I could not have orchestrated that gift; it had to be a gift from the Divine. It was in those days that I wrestled like Jacob. I needed to know a few things: “How to love myself?”, “How to love others?” and certainly “How to be in this world and not of it?” These were just a few of the thoughts that kept me pondering at nights, coming to grips with the choices I had made and the path my life was unfolding in.
